The clever ruler helping homeowners plan their renovations

It seems so simple but isn’t it often the case that the simplest inventions are the best?! We recently came across the RenoRuler from Drafti and we thought more people needed to know about this nifty low-tech gadget!

Draftsman Lachlan Geddes founded Drafti last year. “The idea sparked when I received hand-drawn, hard-to-read plans from a client. This prompted me to ponder how to simplify the process. The next day, I began drafting what is now RenoRuler. Excited by the concept, I quickly produced a prototype and received overwhelming support from friends, family, and colleagues in the architecture community. Determined to keep production local, I found an Australian manufacturer.”

Lachlan says: “The RenoRuler by Drafti was created with a singular goal: to make design easy and accessible for everyone.” It’s an all-in-one design tool that ensures both speed and precision in creating floor plans. The $24.99 ruler is scaled at 1:100 and incudes templates for various elements like benchtops, island benches, vanities, showers, dining tables, beds, couches, door swings, window openings, internal and external walls and more. Its transparency allows seamless overlay of existing floor plans or starting fresh.

“Whether you are a builder, designer, or homeowner, RenoRuler can assist you in drafting your next project,” he adds.

Sales are going well for Lachlan, 30, who has a Bachelor of Architectural Design from RMIT and worked for several years in the architectural field, before going out on his own.

“RenoRuler caters to builders, homeowners, renovators, design professionals and students,” he says. “It’s incredibly user-friendly, making it accessible for anyone interested in designing floor plans. Despite the prevalence of design software, RenoRuler serves as a tangible creative tool, enhancing communication between clients and designers, and empowering users to design without extensive software knowledge.”

At Drafti, he also provides a range of services, including rendering and his Easy Plan Bundle. With the bundle, he scales clients’ existing floor plans and sends them a RenoRuler, allowing them to begin their creative process seamlessly.

“In response to customer demand, we’re actively exploring a diverse range of new design tools spanning various scales and disciplines,” says Lachlan. “Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with everyone praising RenoRuler’s simplicity and effectiveness.”
